It is our goal to understand the function of Runx1 during cortical development by defining in detail the effects that it has on the division and differentiation of cortical progenitor cells. In addition, we will determine whether the effects that these transcription factors have on cortical progenitor proliferation and neuronal fate allocation can be enhanced when they are overexpressed in a complementary manner. Finally, we will use a topological mapping approach to identify the locations of specific genetic domains on cortical progenitor cells that contain the genetic switches that control the cell fate decisions that occur as cells become post-mitotic.
